Anne's Navy and Black Ensemble
Date: 10/01/2008 3:37 PM / Category: Fashion

anneLove Anne Hathaway's look for her appearance on Letterman last night. I'm a big fan of navy and black together (even though it is sometimes frowned upon) and Anne pulls off the look smashingly. Fab has a breakdown of the individual items she is wearing (Marc Jacobs dress, Ferragamo bag, etc.) so be sure to check that out for inspration. I love the black opaque tights with the black pumps. Matching shoes to tights elongates the leg, not unlike the nude shoe of spring. It also provides a seamless look that will be perfect to emulate as the weather cools down.

Recommended: LIERAC Toner

lierac

One of the goodies that the presenters got in their gift bags from the Emmy Awards was a toner from Lierac. I've been using this toner for the past week and I have to admit, I really like it. I haven't been a toner user in the past but now I love swiping this over my skin after washing to make sure all the impurities are gone. The scent is soothing, the formula doesn't dry out my skin and it is an excellent way to wind my skin down for the day. It has also brought me new appreciation for my Fresh Soy Face Cleanser. It is not uncommon for me to swipe on the toner and not have any residue leftover after washing my face, reconfirming how awesome the cleanser is.

Which Boots?

shirtdresstights

One look I want to rock this fall is this navy shirtdress from Urban Outfitters, paired with these wool stockings from Hansel From Basel, that ShopGirl turned me onto a few days ago. I love the contrasting bib and cuffs of the dress and the ribbed stockings would bring a great texture to the whole look. But I'm torn between wearing motorcycle boots, purple shooties or my Jeffrey Campbell boots...and I am, of course, currently daydreaming because in LA today it is literally 100 degrees out. I'm trying to think "cool" thoughts...

Armani's Python Palette

armaniAt $100 this Python Palette from Armani is clearly out of my price range but I can't stop thinking about it.  I love how the eyeshadow incorporates three shades of grey into a python pattern, which was inspired by Armani bags.  I love the lip colors of red and mauve that would work with nearly every outfit, especially with the "it" color of Fall.  And I love the mirror that makes this palette completely portable and perfect for touch-ups on the go.  This is a python I could get on board with, unlike the some other snakes I can think of....

Cut your own hair? Yes or No?

haircut

Ok. So I still haven't gone to get my haircut (since May) and I will cave soon, there is no doubt, but right now I'm still trying everything to keep my hair looking as healthy as possible. I've been using a deep conditioner but it doesn't seem to be doing the trick anymore. And I just read in Self that sometimes "The moisturizing effects of a mask wear off, and hair will become susceptible to dryness in between treatments"(10/08, pg. 92). I think that might be happening here. I think I also need to get a haircut. Then I read on the next page to trim split ends at home, literally only trimming 1/10 of an inch. Very minimal trimming, but still...I don't think I'd want to trim my own hair. But I know plenty of people do it...so I'm curious...

Cancer Vixen

cancer vixenTomorrow is October, which means 2008 is almost over, Halloween is near, Election Day is looming and it's Breast Cancer Awareness month.  You've probably noticed the increase of pink in stores, in magazines and even on referees during Monday Night Football.  Being aware of your risk and early detection is part of the key to beating breast cancer.  Supporting foundations that are researching a cure is another way to help everyone.  C.O. Bigelow is donating $250,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and they also have a great kit, Cancer Vixen, that not only packs some of their best selling products but also features artwork from Marissa Acocella Marchetto.  Marissa is a renowned cartoonist for Glamour and The New Yorker, who's memoir Cancer Vixen, chronicles her battle with breast cancer.  This kit includes their popular Mentha Lip Tint in Pink Mint, Lemon Cream Body Wash, Lemon Body Cream, Tingling Foot Cream and hand cream, all for $30.  I think it's the perfect gift package for any woman, including yourself.  Being aware is a beautiful thing.

Ankle Boots on the Cheap

If you're ready to embrace the ankle-boot trend that is all over the place this season, then here are two designer options on the cheap.

paylessFirst, alice+olivia has designed these boots for Payless. Payless, people! For $48 you can have these fresh take on the trend. I'm in love with the tassled zipper on the back and the patent leather takes these boots from day to night.

simply vera

If you want a more structured look, then head to Kohl's for Vera Wang's Simply Vera ankle boots. These have a more laid back vibe because of the cracked faux-leather. And if you have a narrow foot, the strap across the front is actually functional and you can adjust it for your best fit. Plus they are on sale for $52.

A Snake Massage (Not Recommended for the Ophidiophobic)

snake massage

I don't want to alarm you but: What you are seeing is an actual spa treatment.

That woman is actually receiving a massage with snakes. If you thought the fish pedicure was too creepy, then I'm pretty sure you're not going to like this new trend. But, and I don't want to alarm you further, I've been seeing press on this unique treatment from The Ada Barak Spa in Northern Israel all over the place.

First there was a small write up about it in Allure's Spa Guide this month, then ForbesTraveler.com wrote about it in their Bizarre Spa Treatment slideshow (hence the above pic) and then this morning The Cut writes about it and tells me Time sent a writer to check it out. So the buzz is building and I'm curious as to whether this spa anomaly will translate to American spa-goers. Will people line up to have half a dozen snakes slither and squeeze their tensions away? Well, you can read about the experience the writer for Time had - personally, I'm willing to try it but when the snake starts to nibble on my eyelashes (as happened to the writer) I think I'd be out. Ada Barak, the owner of the spa, says that "Many people prefer the touch of the snake to that of humans." Hmmm...I'm not sure about that....

gap sale

If you're worried about the state of the economy and don't want to be tempted into spending money, then don't go to the Gap this weekend.  If you're worried about the state of economy but need some new wardrobe staples and don't want to spend much money, then get to a Gap this weekend.

For this weekend only, you get an additional 20% off sale items when you enter SALE20 when you check out online or if you print the coupon below and bring it into the store (just click on the coupon to open in a new window).

I didn't even want to pull pictures to show you how awesome the sale is because I didn't want to provide too much temptation.  But if you're tempted, check out the sale selection - some things are already marked down to $13 and then when you get an additional 20% off, it's like they're giving it away.  And we're talking a wide variety - from tanks to sweaters to dresses to pants to underwear - there are major deals to be had.  You can thank me (or curse me) later.
