The Wonders of Baby Shampoo
Date: 11/06/2008 2:41 PM / Category: Beauty, Hair, Makeup, Review
Rating: 0.0/10.0 (0 votes) Guys, I just wrote a little while back about using Johnson's Baby Shampoo as an eye makeup remover. I've been in a play on Wednesday nights and it required some serious black eyeliner and smoky eyeshadow that my Fresh Soy Cleanser need a little help. Just so you know, I used it last night and it worked like a charm! This morning, I used it to wash my hair: I've been a little abusive to my hair as of late - flat-ironing it nearly everyday and then creating perfect little ringlets with a hot curling iron, after straightening, for my show. Not to mention all the product that has built up - frizz-reducers, hairsprays, dry shampoos. My hair was in need of some serious detox. So I thought, I wonder if this baby shampoo will work? Just so you know, my hair feels light, airy and so very very clean. This is a good hair day. This afternoon, I'm planning on using my baby shampoo to clean all my makeup brushes. I can't wait to find out all the other ways I can make this baby shampoo work for me! Do you have any tips? Leave a comment and share with us! {poll id="298"} View Entry
Fashion Advice: Fuschia Heels
Date: 11/04/2008 3:22 PM / Category: Fashion
Rating: 0.0/10.0 (0 votes) I got an email last night from one of my best-dressed and bestest friends and this is what it said:
"Hey there!! I need some fashion advice, my dear. I am in a wedding in Wisconsin during Thanksgiving weekend. The rehearsal dinner is at this trendy little martini bar/lounge in downtown Madison. I have found my dress for it, I think. It's a navy satin mini dress, boat-necked, with kind of kimono sleeves that are just below my elbows. The sleeves are split down the middle at the top and reconnected by three round satin covered buttons, so it shows the skin on the top of my arms. The length is mid-thigh and the cut is kind of trapeze, a-line-ish. So what the heck color shoes do I wear??? I was thinking some other bright color in satin, like a peep toe or pump, in fuschia or bright teal. And would you wear an opaque tight or go bare? Like maybe a soft or medium dark grey? Please help!! :) Love, Hannah" Obviously she is on the right track for accessorizing but I am always happy to help! I think fuschia heels are THE way to go, especially since purple is such a hot color right now. I like the idea of teal but I would like it better in warmer weather. There is something about about bright fuschia heel that is really going to make this dress pop and come alive. Hannah's budget is up to $150 for her shoe choice, but she'd like to only spend on the higher end if it's a shoe that she can incorporate into her work wardrobe, so she gets a lot of wear. Here are a few I found, in a range of prices:
Right now, these from daniblack are my first pick. Found on Zappos for $125, these purple satin pumps are a classically beautiful peep-toe with a rhinestone buckle that are sure to be versatile. You could easily dress these up or down, depending on the outfit. They say they have a 4" heel but a customer review says they are closer to 3.5", making them easy to walk in. They look to be the perfect shade to bring out the beauty of the navy satin dress and since they are from Zappos, its free shipping both ways (just in case!).
These edgier ones from Nine West come in a reallyclosesecond. They are on sale for $59.99 but they only have one size left: size 9. I know Hannah's foot might be a little too small for that, but they might worth hunting around for. Since they are Nine West, they might have them in the stores or in department stores. I'm a little bit in love with zipper detail, the rich shade of purple in satin. These are definitely a pair that would get a lot of wear - at the rehearsal dinner, at work with a pencil skirt, to dinner with skinny jeans. I might have to get these for myself, if I can find them in a smaller size.
An even bolder choice (and Hannah can pull them off!) are these peep toe wedges I found on Victoria's Secret's website. On sale for $45, they would steal the show, bringing a lot of attention to the elongated leg they create and Hannah's legs are already extra long! Since they are suede, they would add an earthier, rock star edge to the navy satin dress.
If she wants to really save money and have a shoe that easily transfers to a work environment, then these patent ribbon trim pumps from Old Navy are the way to go. On sale for $24.50, you can't beat the price and the plum/cherry shade would complement the navy dress without upstaging it.
And in a totally different direction are these patwork leaf heels from Urban Outfitters. They are unique, autumnal and would look great with grey tights...which leads me to the next part of her fashion advice plea: To wear tights or not to wear tights? I say absolutely wear tights. Opaque grey tights are completely "on trend" and they are going to be completely worth it in cold Wisconsin. The actual shade of tights she chooses will be dependent on the final shoe decision but a medium shade will most likely complement both the dress and shoes. Plus, they will add definition and tone to her legs, and with a mini-dress, that is always welcome! Plus-plus, tights add an extra layer of security, which adds an extra layer of confidence and in the end, being comfortable in your outfit translates the most beautiful results. Which shoe choice do you like best? And do you have any other suggestions? Leave a comment and let us know! View Entry
Making Black Lipstick Work
Date: 11/03/2008 3:14 PM / Category: Beauty, Fashion, Makeup
Rating: 0.0/10.0 (0 votes) This still is of Scarlett Johansson in the new movie, The Spirit. And, sure, the film is dark and moody and based on a comic book, but isn't this a beautiful depiction on how to make black lipstick work? It looks like the top she is wearing is a dark, rich, burgundy color, which made me think of holiday parties, which made me think about how chic one would look in an equally rich colored dress, with black lips to tie the look together. I was skeptical about this trend but my mind has changed: Black lipstick would bring a level of mystery and intrigue and glamour to any look. I think the secret will be to incorporate this dark lip color with a dress that has a classic silhouette, so as to let the look skew as "simply elegant" versus "simply goth." I would go with a dress like this from Banana Republic or this from Urban Outfitters. But that's just me. If your style is more on the gothic side, then go full out with dramatic lace! {poll id="294"} View Entry
"Instant Glamour" Goldfish Necklace
Date: 11/03/2008 2:23 PM / Category: Fashion
Rating: 0.0/10.0 (0 votes) On my radar is this unique goldfish necklace from Allison Dayton. I love that it is a beautiful statement piece that would add life to any outfit, especially because of the movement in it's construction. The fish's body is composed of five segments, that allows the necklace to "swim." And this isn't two separate necklaces pictured: it is how the necklace looks on top and bottom - gold on one side, turquoise on the other. I am a big fan of "instant glamour" pieces and this is a necklace that would look perfect with a simple grey or white tee. Or this steel-colored dress I plan on adding to my closet. View Entry

Recommended: Vaseline Cocoa Butter Deep Conditioning Lotion
Date: 10/31/2008 2:13 PM / Category: Skin
Rating: 0.0/10.0 (0 votes) I discovered Vaseline's Cocoa Butter Deep Conditioning Lotion yesterday when I went to Target for some new lightbulbs. You think I could actually resist walking up and down the beauty aisles?? The Cocoa Butter Oil is what first caught my eye because it looks pretty in its bottle and so I started investigating the rest of the line. I opened one lotion and took a whiff and was pleasantly surprised. The scent was subtle and soothing and when I put a little on my hand, it was in no way overwhelming. A girl next to me took a whiff too and remarked, "I kind of want to eat it." Which sounds a little strange when I type it but once you smell it for yourself, you'll understand. I'm sitting here and I keep sniffing my arm. Again, weird sounding when typed, but you'll understand... I bought the big pump bottle (pictured) because I've been having great skin success applying my lotion in the shower, right after toweling off, and the pump bottles are the most convenient for that. I feel beautifully moisturized all over, in no way greasy, and I smell delicious. Did I mention that I avoid scented products like the plague? Scents drive me crazy and give me a headache but this lotion doesn't irritate me in the least. Clearly, if I keep smelling my arm. Maybe it's because it smells faintly of chocolate and today is Halloween? No, I think it's just because it's awesome. View Entry
Happy Halloween!
Date: 10/31/2008 1:38 PM / Category: Entertainment
Rating: 0.0/10.0 (0 votes) Happy Halloween, Latest Beauty-iers! Hopefully you have some fun and/or spooky costumes already cooked up and ready to go, like Mariah and Nick. But, in case you are like me, and you still haven't figured out what you are going to be tonight because you're going to a party that you didn't realize you'd be going to...well, then you should check out this Halloween site. It has tons of fun, cheeky, last-minute ideas of things you can be, from things you most likely already have in your closet. I'm planning on being a deviled-egg! I already have a great red wig with devil horns from my Halloween past and throwing on an all-white outfit with a yellow circle attached for a yolk is something I can definitely conjure up. And it makes me giggle, which is what I like most in a costume. A few years back I wore the same devil wig and a sticker on my shirt that said "Prada." Because I was the Devil Wear Prada. Again, cheesy and delicious. If you have a fun idea to add to the list, leave a comment and tell us all about it! {poll id="292"} (Photo: People.com) View Entry

ColorOn EyeEnvy: Eyeshadow made easy

Rating: 0.0/10.0 (0 votes)
Thought I'd repost this blog that I wrote back in July, in case you need a last minute Halloween costume idea!
Have you been dying to apply camoflauge eye shadow or even zebra print eye shadow? Well your wait is over! Basically eye shadows that you apply by sticker, ColorOn EyeEnvy allows you to "flawlessly" apply even the craziest designs. And ok, maybe I'm mocking this a little, but it actually would be kind of cool for Halloween. And their "basics" collection would let you achieve the perfect smoky eye without all the time and labor. So I'm curious, are you curious? {poll id="110"} View Entry
