When the temperature rises (and remember, folks, it's going to stay hot for at least another month or two!), it's important to brush up on ways to keep your cool - not just for comfort's sake, but also for the good of your health. Check out Vital Juice Daily for some great tips on how to avoid heat stroke, such as eating lighter meals, cutting back on alcohol and caffeine, and dressing appropriately for the weather. One tip that I found particularly interesting, however, involves the concept of "prehydration."
Drink 16 ounces the night/morning before outdoor events. Keep drinking regularly every 20 minutes during activity. If you are thirsty, it’s too late! Clear urine is the sign of hydration.
I've never heard of this before, but it makes perfect sense! I'll have to keep it in mind for the next time I plan on attending an outdoor fair or festival or I'm getting ready for a summer hike or a trip to the beach. I usually feel a little woozy whenever I'm out in the sun for a while, but I always thought I was just more sun-sensitive than other people. Now it seems that it might be possible to sidestep the entire issue just by drinking some water ahead of time. So remember to hydrate yourself before you leave the house instead of waiting until you're thirsty. It'll help you enjoy your summer fun that much more!
