Find a New Favorite at ScentMap.com Posted By: MelissaP 10/10/2008 5:37 PM |
This is so cool! If you're keeping an eye out for a new fragrance but you don't really know where to start (I usually sniff out scents based on which have the prettiest bottles...maybe not the best way to do it!) or you like to give perfume as a gift, you have to check out Scentmap. Just choose the name of your favorite perfume (or a friend's fave scent, if you're looking for gift ideas) from a drop-down menu and the site immediately gives you five more fragrances that are likely to appeal to you. I entered Thierry Mugler's Angel and it returned Calvin Klein Euphoria and Lolita Lempicka, both of which I love, so I know I really have to check out their other three suggestions as well (Flower by Kenzo, Thierry Mugler Innocent and Viktor & Rolf's Flowerbomb). I'm excited!View/Add Comments (0) | Rating: 0.0/10.0 (0 votes)

Glamour's 3D Special: Gimmicky or Great? Posted By: MelissaP 10/10/2008 4:46 PM |
...and speaking of Glamour, have you seen the November issue yet? They have an article on "The 6 Hottest New Trends" - in 3D! The issue comes complete with a tear-out pair of retro-looking 3D glasses and an 18-page (count 'em!) spread of three-dimensional ads and images. While the images themselves succeed in the format to varying degrees - my personal favorite is an ad for Givenchy's Phenomen'Eyes mascara, with its spray of daddy-long-leg's lashes leaping off the page - I still appreciate the fact that Glamour made an effort to try something new. What do you think?

Lotion in the Shower, Duh! Posted By: meagan 10/10/2008 2:08 PM |
Love this tip I just read in Glamour:
I used to be lotion-phobic in cold weather - I'd freeze - until I realized that leaving mine in the shower while I'm in there or submerging it in a sink with hot water takes the chill out. The warmth also helps it sink in better. (11/08, pg. 98)
Of course! Why didn't I think of this myself?? I have perpetually dry skin and if you suffer from it like I do then this makes total sense. Putting lotion on your skin while it is still damp helps to seal the moisture in as well so it seems like a no brainer to keep lotion in the shower. The idea of warmed lotion also sounds refreshingly decadent. I can't wait until my next shower to try this out: just towel off, wrap up my hair and lather up in some warm lotion! This little tip might just revolutionize my skin care regime!

UPDATE: Anya Hindmarch for Target Posted By: meagan 10/10/2008 1:36 PM |
This was an interesting read on The Cut today:
Anya Hindmarch for Target's collection went on sale online on Wednesday and sold out in two minutes.
I was quite surprised to hear this, especially since you guys (myself included) weren't too impressed with the line. Even more so because these bags tend to look much different in person than online. The collection becomes available in stores on 10/12 so I'll wait to check them out then. I'm interested to see what this clutch looks like in person. It looks classic and pretty in this picture...but I've been burned by Target's designer bags before. I'll keep you posted on my in-person impressions.

Boot-iful Posted By: meagan 10/10/2008 1:14 PM |
You guys! It's cooled down here in LA! It is cool enough that I had to wear a scarf whilst cycling to Latest Beauty headquarters today. So I'm pretty excited that it's not 100 degrees out anymore and while it's probably not cool enough to wear these awesome boots yet, I've got my eye on these beauties. I love the wedge. I love the fold-over with buckle. I love that they are stylish and yet classic all at once, lending to their versatility. I love that they are suede. And while $169 is a little much for my budget right now with the stock market crumbling all around us, they are Nine West plus they are on Piperlime, which means the likelihood of sales surrounding this boot is good. So I think I'll have to place a sale alert on it so I can track it and get them when a deal strikes.

MAC's Halloween Templates Posted By: MelissaP 10/08/2008 6:38 PM |
Still undecided about your Halloween costume? MAC wants to help. Check out their amazing makeup templates for Halloween.
These are three of the more "extreme" looks, but they also have templates for a beautiful, watery "amphibian" look, an antique doll look that is the perfect mixture of cute and creepy, and an earthy yet ethereal "wood nymph" look - among others. Each template has a link detailing which products and techniques were used to create these spooky masterpieces, but they're probably a bit advanced unless you're a makeup pro. Instead, you might want to take the website's advice and "see a MAC artist" for in-depth instructions. Feeling inspired yet?

FREE Lip Gloss w/ Sweater Purchase at Victoria's Secret Posted By: MelissaP 10/08/2008 5:56 PM |
Fall is here, which means I'm craving sweaters (despite
the unseasonably hot weather). And of course I'm always down for new lip gloss. Leave it to Victoria's Secret to combine my love of cozy, sexy sweaters with my fondness for pretty lip products: They're currently offering a special promotion where any sweater purchase will net you a FREE 3-piece Beauty Rush lip gloss set when you enter the code RUSH08 at checkout. You'll get three full-size glosses in Strawberry Fizz (a shimmery soft pink - pictured), Sugar High (a sparkly pearl) and Cherry Bomb (a sexy fuchsia). Plus, VS has tons of cute sweaters, with prices starting at $19. I'm in love with this wine-colored bomber cardigan; it looks incredibly comfortable and I love the shape. Check out their selection today; this offer is good now through November 19th.

Moccasins with a twist Posted By: meagan 10/08/2008 3:45 PM |
So I am a lot a bit in love with these moccasins from American Eagle. The shearling that coats in the insides looks so cozy and warm that I'm not sure I would ever want to take them off. The outer suede is silver - silver! I'm not sure I've ever seen that in a moc. The style is classic which means I could get a lot of wear out of them. And the soles are rubber, which is always a bonus for my clumsy self. I need a shoe with some traction! They have these in browns and black and even pink, but the silver has stolen my heart. And at $29, these fit into the budget. Holla!

SALE ALERT: J.Crew Matchstick Jeans Posted By: meagan 10/08/2008 2:42 PM |
If you're a fan of J.Crew's matchstick jean, like I am, then today is your lucky day. They have three colors on sale, including the featured Honey Glaze shade, starting at $29.99 - down from $88. I love the bright color of the matchstick and their skinny silouhette - perfect for pairing with boots, shooties, flats and heels - so, basically, anything. The color pumps up any look and I love how they've styled them in their catalogues with muted silvers and greys. They even have a grey pair if you want to be less loud with your matchsticks. Certain sizes are already sold out, so get over there quickly to claim your pair!

Frankenpolish! Posted By: MelissaP 10/07/2008 6:54 PM |
I know I've mentioned my favorite nail polish blog, All Lacquered Up, before. ALU is truly the best online destination I've come across for all things polish-related: The latest shades, the hottest collections, fantastic photos and thorough descriptions. I always end up wanting polishes that I didn't even know existed! But this might be the best post I've encountered on All Lacquered Up to date: Feast your eyes on Frankenpolish! Part mad scientist, part beauty junkie, the art of nail polish color customization (not to be confused with layering colors on the nail itself) involves combining different shades of polish in a separate bottle to create a new shade that's completely unique. ALU offers a little how-to on the subject, and a link to Makeup Alley's Frankenpolish Notepad. This fabulous resource offers valuable tips for beginners and lots of intriguing "recipes." Some of these shades are gorgeous, so much prettier than anything you can find in a store - and the best part is, the sky is the limit! You can create any color you want! I'm dying to do a little mix'n'match of my own. Have you ever tried creating your own custom color of nail polish?

Anya Hindmarch for Target Posted By: MelissaP 10/07/2008 6:15 PM |
More exciting news on the Target front: The latest designer handbag collaboration to hit everyone's favorite low-end chain store comes courtesy of Anya Hindmarch. According to a recent Target press release,
"This limited-time-only collection embodies sophisticated and elegant silhouettes. A palette rich in chocolate, gold and black hues stand out with a timeless patent finish. French bindings in playful textures and contrasting colors add glamour to this handbag collection. Styles include chic satchels, shoulder bags and clutches that can accessorize from day until night. The Anya Hindmarch for Target collection ranges in price from $19.99 to $49.99, making it an incredible value. The bags in Anya's mainline collection are priced from $995 to $6,500 for a bespoke crocodile bag."![]()
Yowza! That's some savings. But how do the bags look? The collection doesn't hit stores until October 12th, but you can get a sneak preview on Hindmarch's website. So far, my thoughts are that the bags look well-designed but perhaps a little too structured and ladylike for my tastes. Plus, as we learned from the Gryson collection, the most important thing when it comes to buying handbags from Target is to look before you leap - a piece that appears luxe online might come off as cheap and tacky in person! Let's hope that's not the case with the Anya Hindmarch bags.

Jonathan Saunders for Target Posted By: meagan 10/07/2008 2:47 PM |
Jonathan Saunders' GO International collection for Target debuted over the weekend and I have my sights set on this long sweater. I love all the color blocking in his collection and the black and red together in this sweater is bold enough to be a neutral piece throughout the chilly months. I particularly like the hood for a laid back vibe and I also love the fact that I could sport this as a dress, not unlike my latest long sweater find (which I've been wearing every chance I get).

Shopping Story Posted By: meagan 10/07/2008 2:23 PM |
Hello, Latest Beauty-iers! I have been absent from the blog these past few days because my mom and friend were visiting. It was so great spending time with my mama! We had a lot of fun and I have to share this shopping story with you. The three of us ladies took a trip up to Santa Barbara for a day and did some shopping on State Street. We happened upon an Anthropologie and found these awesome Sidewinder flats. They were on sale for $39 (originally $78), so needless to say we ALL got a pair. They are super comfy and go with everything. The story doesn't end there though! Once back in LA we waltzed into the Anthropologie at The Grove and happened upon the same flats we already bought. Curious, my mom turned over the flat to see if they were on sale there as well. Imagine her (and our) shock when the ticket price said $118!! Yowza!! How crazy is that?? The shoes not being on sale wasn't such a surprise, but the fact that they had been obscenely marked up from the original price (the $78 price that is even listed on the website) was quite surprising. Our $39 purchase suddenly seemed like quite the steal. Lesson learned? It pays to shop around!

DIY: Barbie Shoe Earrings Posted By: MelissaP 10/06/2008 7:41 PM |
Feeling crafty? Here's a super cute and easy DIY jewelry idea from Cut Out + Keep: Barbie shoe earrings! Check out their step-by-step instructions, which involve little more than grabbing a pair of Barbie shoes (or doll shoes of any kind), piercing a hole through them and attaching an earring hook. I particularly adore the ruby slippers variation, which you can duplicate at home with a thin layer of clear glue and a few coats of red glitter. Fun!

Punky Brewster, Fashion Icon Posted By: MelissaP 10/06/2008 6:22 PM |
What child of the '80s could forget Punky Brewster, that lovable, spunky orphan whose mischievous shenanigans and precocious wit made her a personal hero of many little girls - myself included - back in the day? Her cute, colorful clothes, wacky right down to her mismatched sneakers, helped her put her
own "punky" spin on things, and when I was 7 years old I thought there was basically no one cooler. Now, decades later, it seems like I'm not the only one who was loving Punky. Observe this shot of the perpetually youthful Drew Barrymore, enjoying her weekend in black jeans, a shrunken sweatshirt, and...mismatched Converse sneakers?! (Click to enlarge.) I'm all for indulging in a little nostalgia from time to time, and you know how I feel about Punky, but I wonder if this look really needs to be revived. What do you think of Drew's quirky footwear?
