Painterly prints - bold, arty, irregular patterns, sometimes complete with visible "brush" strokes - are popping up everywhere right now, and after reading about this trend in every fashion magazine under the sun, I'm just about ready to embrace it...with a few reservations. I still think it can look a little garish, but if you really focus on toning down the rest of your outfit, it just might work - and it's undeniably eye-catching.
There are basically two ways to wear this trend: As an unusual floral print, or as a piece of wearable abstract art. Here are a few examples of painterly florals to get you started:

All offer a cute, unusual twist on your standard spring floral fare. I think these pieces are pretty wearable as well - just avoid over-accessorizing and pair with basics in solid colors.
The abstract designs are a bit more intimidating.

I like these tops because they give you an easy way to try out the trend without putting too much thought into it: Just throw on a pair of jeans and some strappy sandals, and you're ready to go. This dress is a particularly understated example of the abstract painterly trend as well, and I like the girly details (belted waist, ruffled hem) to offset the modernity of the pattern.

If you're like me, however, and you're still not
completely sold on these painterly prints, you may want to consider the most low-risk option of all: This slouchy bag from Old Navy. Try it out. See how you feel about the trend. Do you feel pretty in painterly, or does it feel more like you should be framed and put on a gallery wall? If it's the former, there are lots of ways to branch out with this trend (see above!) - and if it's the latter, hey - you only spent $14.99!
