I recently read a piece in the L.A. Times about vests, which I've never been particularly partial to...but I must admit, my fashion sense is tingling. I think what really won me over was the way model/runway stylist/vest fan Erin Wasson describes them in the article as "a version of the cardigan...another way to layer up your look." Whenever the temperature dips (or I just want to be prepared for air-conditioned rooms in the summer), cardigans are my go-to piece for added warmth. Plus, I feel they can really tie an outfit together without looking too "dressed up." After reading Erin's tips for wearing a vest with aplomb, I am now confident that I may be able to pull off this look without resembling Mayim Bialik on Blossom. (Remember Blossom?!)
Here are some vest guidelines for the uninitiated (like me):
Whether you choose a longer vest or a mini-vest, make sure the bottom of the vest reaches at least to the top of your hemline. Wearing a tiny vest over a big shirt is the quickest way to date this look!
For the freshest take on the look, pair the vest with a v-neck T-shirt, or forego the shirt entirely (make sure the vest is large enough - and you're on the small-breasted side - if you decide to go this route!). Wearing a vest with a buttoned-up shirt or a more structured piece looks far too uptight.
Speaking of not looking uptight, it's a good idea to keep the entire outfit casual. Throw on jeans, a scarf, a denim jacket, or some cool, chunky jewelry to accessorize. Don't make it look like a uniform!
Skirts are a great option with vests, but make sure you choose a pencil skirt or a longer skirt with some volume. Take heed of this warning from Ms. Wasson: "Just make sure you don't wear a short skirt, or you'll look like Britney Spears." Eek! (Yes, the runway model pictured above is wearing a short skirt, but we all know that fashion rules don't apply on the runway, 'kay?)
After checking out the different vests featured along with the article, my personal favorite is this black menswear style piece from Urban Outfitters. The subtle pinstripes and wide lapels give the vest a more formal air, which would provide a nice contrast when paired with a fitted white (v-neck!) shirt, jeans and a cute pair of heels. I also love anything in black, for the versatility; and of course, finding a versatile piece is very important when you're attempting to wear a style that you don't normally wear. If you start with a big statement piece, you'll probably be more reluctant to try it out, right? This is a great beginner's vest! Perhaps now I can finally give my many cardigans a rest.
