I always get crazy nostalgic for half-forgotten items from my childhood, i.e. Pudding Pops, Troop Beverly Hills, those weird little pogo balls that people used to hop around on at recess. So it will probably come as no surprise that I'm excited about the proliferation of jelly shoes in adult sizes! Yes, they're a little silly, but they also make me think of Popsicles, BBQs and playing outside. It all started when I saw this pair of jelly gladiator sandals on Old Navy's website:
Something about the translucent red plastic just screams summer. And it's waterproof, so you can wear it to the beach/pool/swimmin' hole of your choice! It also comes in a variety of colors.
This style, by Grendha, is more in keeping with the traditional little kid version that I remember. In fact, it's practically identical.
If you're looking to go a little more high-end with the whole trend - well, believe it or not, that's an option! Check out Marc Jacobs' fun take on the jelly shoe.
Will I actually wear these? It's hard to say. Truth be told, I scored a pair of translucent pink jelly pumps a couple of years ago, and I hardly ever wear them - they're uncomfortable, not incredibly versatile (in terms of finding an outfit that complements them), and they make my feet sweat! They also instantly reminded me of the #1 problem I had with jelly shoes, even as a kid: They mercilessly rub the back of your feet. Ouch! Yet I still get inexplicably excited every time I see a grown-up version in stores. My advice? Pick up a cheap pair at Old Navy before you splurge on Marc Jacobs. They're fun to have, but they probably won't become your new favorite shoe.
