first family

America, meet your new First Family! Last night was an exciting and momentous occasion, and when Barack Obama triumphantly took the stage in Chicago’s Grant Park with his beautiful family, the world was watching. I’ve been a big fan of First Lady-elect Michelle Obama’s fun-yet-sensible style for a long time now - and I particularly love how she really elevates affordable standards from stores such as J. Crew and H&M - but last night was one party for which she decided to go all out, splurging on a designer dress. Mrs. Obama chose a piece from American designer Narciso Rodriguez’s Spring ‘09 collection, albeit one that was slightly modified from its runway incarnation to look a bit more conservative than sexy.

Alterations notwithstanding, it was still a bold and interesting choice, and one that has sharply divided fashion junkies. I’ll admit that on my TV, the dress looked a little strange, but when I examined pictures later I was sold. Michelle wisely kept the rest of her look basic with simple jewelry, a black cardigan and a pair of black kitten heels. She looks every inch the strong, confident and supportive First Lady, and I think we’re lucky to have someone so willing to take fashion risks in the White House! As for the rest of the family, daughters Malia and Sasha looked adorable and age-appropriate, and President-elect Obama looked handsome and dignified in one of his signature well-tailored, custom-made suits.
